Kitchen Care: How to Make Your Appliances Last

With all the money we put into having a well-functioning kitchen with all its appliances, it’s strange that we’re not taking better care of it. Sure, the first week or so we treat our new appliance as if it’s the most precious things in the world – but soon enough, we’re back to overloading the dishwasher and never cleaning the oven again.

While most appliances tend to last for some time, they will last much longer when you learn to treat them with love and care. It’s quite easy as well as soon as you get into the habit. Start by having a look at these excellent ways you can care for your kitchen so that it can continue to take care of you.

#1 Make your fridge last

Have you ever come home to a broken fridge? We don’t really think about how much we depend on it until it calls it a day, and you’re left with a ton of food ready to thaw and deteriorate. The most important thing you can do for your fridge is to take care of its condenser coils; those are the little helpers inside the fridge that keeps the air cool.

If they decide to break, the air simply won’t be cold anymore – and, although it may sound like the fridge is working, it certainly isn’t. Clean the coils at least once a year when you’re already cleaning the inside of the fridge. That way, you’ll prolong its life and it will keep your food chill.

#2 Consider the dishwasher

The two main things you can do for your dishwasher is, firstly, to open it as soon as it’s done doing the dishes. Now you’ll avoid having that awful smell inside the dishwasher. You should also run it on an empty cycle with a dishwasher cleaner once in a while, though, to make sure that everything is running smoothly.

The second and most important part is not to overload the dishwasher. This wears it out in no time and, while you may think that you’re saving time as you won’t have to do that additional pot by hand, you’re actually doing yourself a disfavour as it’s likely to break.

Make a note of a good plumbing company, such as Sydney Emergency Plumbing, in case it should break so that you don’t have to do the dishes by hand for too long.

#3 Care for your oven

Cleaning the oven can be a dreadful task unless you have one of those self-cleaning ovens. If this is the case, you simply have to set it on the self-cleaning setting once in a while and forget about it until it’s done.

If you, however, don’t have one of these, you better give it a good clean once a month. That way, you won’t have to struggle with a massive cleanup every time you decide to finally pull up your sleeves. Have a look at this article if you’re not sure where to start, and remind yourself that what’s good for your oven is also good for your bank account.

Appliances tend to break when we least expect it – and often also when we need them the most. Treat them with love and appreciation, however, and they will last a lot longer.

Explore Materials

There are all kinds of materials that you can use for your kitchen splashback. Of course, you need to be able to wipe it down and keep it clean. But don’t worry about materials that might not naturally be the most resistant to mess. You can easily add a protective coating or barrier that allows you to choose whatever material you want. Even wood can look incredible as a kitchen splashback material. However, if you don’t want to risk using wood, trying creating a mock wood look with another material, such as tile. Glass, stainless steel and even marble or granite provide more options.

Choose a Decorative Pattern

You can be highly decorative with your kitchen splashback. Using tiles and other materials, you can play with the look of your splashback. Find a contractor like the ones at https://hatchettcontractors.com/services/kitchen-remodeling-company-2/ to help you install it and suggest ideas. You can do almost anything, as long as you can protect the surface so that it’s practical. From patterned tin sheets to photo walls and embossed concrete, there are plenty of ways to add excitement to your kitchen splashback.

Get Bright and Colorful

If you don’t want to create a pattern with your kitchen splashback, you could just concentrate on the colors. You can use any color you want, especially with materials like tile giving you plenty of choice. A bright splashback could look fantastic and draw the eye, especially if the rest of the room uses more neutral colors. Find some ideas at https://www.hgtv.com/design/rooms/kitchens/30-splashy-kitchen-backsplashes-pictures. If you use tiles, you can have a couple of different colors alternating. Whether you use a larger subway tile or a small tile that will allow you to have more detail, choose the hues that you enjoy.

Contrast with Walls, Cabinets and Counters

Kitchen splashbacks don’t stand on their own, so you need to consider surrounding elements too. In fact, you can find the right look by playing off other elements, like cabinets and countertops. For example, you could contrast a neutral splashback with a bright wallpaper that frames the splashback. Choose a contrasting countertop that helps the splashback to stand out or consider your stove, range hood and other appliances.

The splash might not seem like a hugely significant part of your kitchen. However, it doesn’t need to blend into the background and only serve as a practical feature.
